Life Body Casting at Arts Haven Studio: Cold Casting Materials & Final Finishes

At Arts Haven Studio, we specialise in life body casting, a delicate artistic process that captures the intricate detail and texture of the human form in breathtaking, permanent sculptures. Whether it is a hand, foot, torso, or a full-body cast, our skilled team carefully moulds and reproduces these forms to create meaningful, timeless artworks.

The Cold Casting Process

Once your cast is taken, we move to the cold casting stage—a highly refined process where the initial mould is transformed into a solid, artistic final piece. Cold casting allows us to simulate the look and feel of metal or stone without the expense and weight of traditional foundry casting.

In this stage, we infuse the casting resin with high-grade metallic powders or mineral compounds. This blend is poured into the mould and cured, creating a highly durable and visually striking final product. Once cured, the surface is polished, burnished, or patinated to achieve the desired metallic or ceramic effect.

Materials We Use for Cold Casting

We offer a range of premium cold-cast finishes, each with distinct characteristics, textures, and price points:

  • Aluminium Powder Finish:
A sleek, silvery appearance resembling cast aluminium. Offers a modern, industrial look.
    Affordable compared to other metals.

  • Iron Powder Finish:
Produces a dark, slightly aged, and rustic appearance when oxidised or patinated.
Moderate cost, with a unique antique look.

  • Copper Powder Finish:
Gives the work a luxurious, warm reddish-brown metallic sheen. Copper patination can create vivid greens and blues.
Higher cost, reflecting the premium material.

  • Brass Powder Finish:
Creates a rich golden finish, simulating the look of cast brass. Durable and elegant.
Priced similarly to copper, but with a brighter hue.

  • Ceramic/Stone Powder Finish:
Simulates the look of fine stoneware or ceramic sculpture, often used for a more traditional, matte finish.
Usually the most economical, but not metallic.

Pricing Considerations

The final cost of your artwork depends on:

  • The size and complexity of the casting (e.g., wristband, hand cast, torso, full body).

  • The type of finish you choose. For instance, a wristband cast using copper powder will be significantly more expensive than one using ceramic powder, due to the higher cost of raw materials and additional polishing/patination work.

  • The labour involved in finishing, polishing, and sealing the piece.

For example:

  • A ceramic powder wristband may cost £XX–£YY.

  • The same wristband in copper powder could cost £XX + 40–60%, reflecting the material's premium nature.

Final Touches

Each finished work is hand-polished, optionally patinated, and sealed to protect it from oxidation and wear. The result is a beautiful, durable work of art that can be displayed proudly for years to come.
