uki Matsueda – Be Ready To Run!
Be Ready To Run! is a playful and surrealistic piece by Yuki Matsueda, exemplifying his celebrated technique of liberating two-dimensional graphics through three-dimensional interventions. In this piece, a retro-styled silkscreen poster—mimicking the aesthetics of 1960s commercial packaging—features a can labeled “Super Egg” and the urgent phrase “Be Ready To Run / No Hesitation.”
What transforms this from poster to sculpture is the chrome tin can bursting out of the surface, warping the clear PET material as it breaks free—rendering the flat image an active participant in its own escape.
Conceptual Commentary:
-
Commercial irony: The stylized can evokes consumer branding (a nod to Warhol and pop art), yet its message—“Be Ready to Run”—clashes with the very idea of mass-produced stasis. It’s branding with an escape plan.
-
Symbol of disruption: The can, often representing preservation or containment, is here an agent of rupture. The act of escaping packaging becomes a metaphor for breaking societal molds, routines, or constraints.
-
Subtle warning: The phrase “No hesitation” may imply urgency, resistance, or an existential prompt—reflecting Matsueda’s deeper inquiry into control, conformity, and autonomy in visual culture.
